Helsinki is the capital and largest city in Finland. It is in the southern part of Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, by the Baltic Sea. The population of the city of Helsinki is around 600,000 inhabitants, but along with neighboring cities it constitutes an area where over 1 million people live.
Helsinki is Finland's capital for business, education, research, culture, and government. Some 70% of foreign companies operating in Finland have settled in the Helsinki region. The immigration of rural residents has made it one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Europe.
Former Helsinki Business Polytechnic, now renamed as Haaga-Helia University Of Applied Sciences (Helia) is Finland's largest business polytechnic (Ammattikorkeakoulu in Finnish). It is an open polytechnic, owned by a foundation, which is run by Helsinki's Business-life. Helia-building number 1, locates in Pasila. Other premises are located in Porvoo, Malmi, Vallila. Helia offers education on Business Economics, Information technology, Management Assistant Education, Communications and Tourism Education, Journalism, vocational teacher education programs and languages. There are about 6,000 students in Helia. There are about 380 people working in Helia of which 230 are full-time teachers.
The former Helsingin Sihteeriopisto (HSO) is now part of Helia.
In 2006 Helia and Haaga Polytechnic Institute merged. This new school began operating in the beginning of the year 2007. That increased the total amount of students to 10,000 and staff to 600.
