The city is well known in recent times for the 1992 Summer Olympics. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean are located in Barcelona.

It is a member of the Coimbra Group, LERU, European University Association, Mediterranean Universities Union, International Research Universities Network and Joan Lluís Vives Institute.
With 75 undergraduate programs, 353 graduate programs and 96 doctorate programs to over 90,000 students, UB is considered to be the best University in Spain. Internationally, the 2010 QS World University Rankings ranked the university 148th overall in the world.
