Learning outcomes of the course unit
  • Students understand the physical principles of the most important measuring feeders for process engineering and thus are able to evaluate the quality of data obtained and to recognise the physical limits of use of such measuring feeders. Once they have completed the course, they will know the fundamental procedures of error calculation and preparation of measurement data. They know the structure and functionality of the most important actuators and are able to verify their areas of application. They are able to solve typical measurement problems via ready-made components and to evaluate product documentation.
Students are able to categorise controlled systems and to develop adequate controlling strategies.
Course contents
  • • Transfer function in time and frequency range (Laplace transformation)
    • Basic transmission components (first and higher order proportional, integral, differential, dead time and delay components)
    • Simple controllers (2 point, 3 point, P, PI, PD, PID)
    • Controller adjustment procedures (Ziegler-Nichols procedure etc.)
    • Optimisation of controlling parameters in frequency range (average frequency, phase reserve, …)
    • Actuators
    • Programmable logic controllers (PLC)
Kleger, R.: Sensorik für Praktiker, AZ Fachverlage AG, Aarau, 1998 bzw. VDE Verlag Berlin
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
  • The course comprises an interactive mix of lectures, discussions and individual and group work.
