Sierre (German: Siders) is the capital of the district of Sierre in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is situated on the French-German language border of the canton of Wallis (Valais in French). It has a population of 14,355. At the beginning of the 20th century, Sierre became economically important as very early aluminium smelting is enabled by its access to hydroelectricity. Today the aluminium factory 'Novelis' employs 1200 workers in Chippis and Sierre.
Hesso Wallis is one of the universities of applied Sciences in Switzerland. It has two sites, Sion and Sierre. Business and Tourism programs are taught in Sierre.
