INNOVATION AND INITIATIVE Metaverse and Higher Education: Spot the Avatar! Building on our previous news article on Metaverse and Higher Education as a new learning and experience space, here is a video on Teaching@MCI where you can meet our new avatar Cindy. The special thing about the Metaverse is the focus on social interaction and the feeling of being able to be part of this "new world" by yourself. Cindy is now part of the MCI Learning Solutions team and you will meet her in the digital space from time to time. DIDACTCS AND TEACHING  Digital tools for more interactivity in the classroom Need a breath of fresh air in your teaching? We've curated a selection of digital tools for you on the Teach Online site in the following four categories: - Getting Started, Warm-up & Activation- Active learning- Collaborative work- Completion, Feedback, Assessment When using digital tools, it is important that they also create a comprehensible, didactical, added value in the teaching setting, such as activating prior knowledge or guiding and supporting the learning process. Click here for the tools: Teach Online Please note: When using external tools, i.e. tools that have not been developed, centrally supported or hosted by the MCI, the handling of personal data must be checked and, if necessary, communicated to the students. How can you use MOOCs for your own teaching? Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are not only a useful opportunity for continuing education and training for students, teachers and faculty. A MOOC or parts of it can be integrated into a course in different ways. This gives you the opportunity to integrate up-to-date as well as high-quality content from the respective subject area into your teaching. Here are some strategies for integrating MOOCs into teaching: - MOOC content (e.g. videos, resources, exercises) can be used as learning materials within or outside of class (flipped classroom model), e.g. to develop basic knowledge.- In face-to-face teaching, the MOOC content can be critically reflected upon and other perspectives or approaches can be developed.- Participation in the discussion forums of MOOCs can be incorporated as interactive elements in the asynchronous teaching (at the same time, this enables students to participate in an international community)- Students create resources (e.g. in the form of an assignment) and share them with the MOOC community- MOOCs can be made available as an optional add-on resource De Lima Guedes et al. (2022) have developed a MOOC-based blend framework on how to integrate MOOCs into teaching. Here is the link to the article.  Link to MCI MOOCs: https://www.mci.edu/en/moocs-en     Link to MOOC platforms on Teach Online.    LEARNING AND COMMUNITY CORNER  Lifelong Learning am MCI Why is lifelong learning so important? How do I actually learn properly? The format of self-directed learning is, among other aspects, an important pillar of the competence of "lifelong learning". With the creation of self-learning units, students have the opportunity to practise this skill in a "supported" space. Self-directed learning also offers a high degree of flexibility in terms of time, which can be a great advantage especially for students who have other commitments (job, family, etc.). Furthermore, in this learning format, inequalities in terms of prior knowledge, interest in the subject matter, learning pace, etc. can be balanced out well. More information on the preparation of self-learning units can be found on Teach Online. Here is an insight into the different formats of lifelong learning at the MCI: Your Learning Solutions Team If you have any questions please contact us here: learningsolutions@mci.edu Our website can be found here: https://www.mci.edu/en/university/the-mci/innovative-teaching

DIDACTCS AND TEACHING  Teaching and Learning at MCI - New video on Blended Learning is online The MCI combines the strengths of on-campus teaching and learning formats with those of online formats. This blended learning approach is integrated in all MCI study programs and enables modern and student-centred teaching and learning.Get an overview of what studying at MCI can look like by watching the new blending learning video. You are also welcome to embed the video on your Sakai course site or study site to give your students an overview of the teaching format. Direct link: https://youtu.be/vpkuLozwM0I Image rights - what do I have to consider? The use of images, for example in one's own presentation, always gives rise to uncertainties. Am I allowed to use the image at all? Under what conditions? Am I also allowed to edit it? Basically, every image is protected by copyright law (UrhG) and therefore may not be used arbitrarily. The image may only be used under the respective conditions of use if an appropriate license or the consent of the copyright holder(s) is available. The Knowledge Transfer Center West has created a red thread on the topic of image rights that will help you evaluate your images and provide tips for free image material: >> Der rote Faden.pdf (German) INNOVATION AND INITIATIVE Metaverse and Higher Education The metaverse is a word combination of "meta" (beyond) and "verse" (universe) and is understood as a digital space in which augmented reality (XR) is used. Through the use of augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR), the metaverse offers the potential to become a new learning and experiential space. Using a virtual version of ourselves, we move through digital space as an avatar, meeting and interacting with other people. What sounds like science fiction could be a new way to complete simulated lab exercises, recreate construction projects or take a virtual field trip with your own avatar. What is special about the Metaverse is the focus on social interaction and the feeling of being able to be part of this "new world" yourself. In the following video you will get an overview how Metaverse coulde look like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6VsxcVpBVY LEARNING AND COMMUNITY CORNER  Community Corner on Teach Online  On the Teach Online site, the support site for (online) teaching, a Community Corner is now available to you. DIDAKTICS & TEACHING Tips for making grading less painful For many of you, the end of the semester is in sight—or at least it would be if you didn’t face a huge pile of exams and papers to grade. Grading season can be a slog—we’re sharing tips to make the process less painful. 1. Allow enough time to complete the grading of exams in smaller chunks.2. Set a goal for yourself, e.g. grade 10 papers a day and then give yourself permission to do something else.3. Use rubrics to ensure that you are grading consistently and transparently. Further techniques are presented on the following pages: "Grading Strategies" from Western University’s Centre for Teaching and Learning "Tips on Grading Efficiently" from Berkeley University’s Teaching and Resource Center „How to Grade Faster in 2020" by Deborah J. Cohan, published in Inside Higher Ed Good luck, and let us know, what grading hacks work best for you? INNOVATION & INITIATIVE EDTECH Austria Webinar with Lyuba Stafyeyeva, MA on Remote Proctoring Innovationsservice Salzburg together with EDTECH Austria organised a webinar on "Remote Proctoring: Dos and Dont's". Our colleague Lyuba Stafyeyeva, MA, took part and presented basic approaches, considerations and challenges in online proctoring of exams from a university perspective. The webinar was an exciting exchange, as the topic was examined from different perspectives: - Insights from international solution providers for remote proctoring- The perspective of users such as universities- Student perspective- Legal perspective Here (partly in German) are the presentation slides of the individual presentations from the webinar for review. Conclusion of the webinar from the MCI's point of view: Good proctoring is good proctoring, whether online or in person. So let's not be fooled: Guide to compressing videos We would like to inform you about a new guide on how to compress files. Some of you may have been confronted with large video files from recorded MCI webinars® or other files to share with your students via Sakai. It is possible to quickly exceed the maximum upoad limit of 150 MB or the total storage limit of 1 GB in a course site. To help you find a quick solution, we have created a short guide for the HandBrake software. The software is used to compress or shrink files and allows you to share your files with students in Sakai without much quality reduction.  The guide is available for you on our internal Sharepoint in the Media Productions section, on the Teach Online site and here as direct link. With this in mind - Let's compress!   If you have other questions regarding your teaching, we are always here for you! Your Learning Solutions Team.
