Virtual laboratory at MCI This year, too, the Bachelor students from the Department of Biotechnology and Food Engineering will get an opportunity to practice with Labster virtual lab before they enter the real laboratory. Additionally to pre-lab experience and as preparation to exam, Labster simulations give our students an opportunity to simulate experiments that would go beyond the scope of a traditional laboratory class. You can read more about Labster integration in a traditional classroom setting at MCI in testimonial of Dr. Carmen Nussbaumer, who was using Labster intensively at her class. Link to testimonial: here Using Case studies in teaching Fancy a new teaching strategy for the new academic year? Why not try using case studies for a change? Working with case studies makes it easier for students to put what they have learned into practice. When dealing with complex, ambiguous cases, students can develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, analytical skills, but also organisational and communicative skills. For those of you who have little or no experience in using case studies in teaching, the Learning Solutions Team has developed a short and concise didactic guide that describes this method and provides useful tips on the use of case studies. The guide and additional materials are available from the Learning Solutions Sharepoint site (currently only in German, English translation to follow).   LEARNING & COMMUNITY CORNER CoffeeCupLearning for digital skills A great opportunity for professional learning: the Online Campus Virtual PH offers online learning units that last no longer than a coffee break, where you can expand your digital skills without spending a lot of time.   TEACHING & LEARNING Games for Learning and Instruction We learn through games since our childhood. We learn language arts with “Scrabble”, math with “Uno”, strategic thinking with Chess, and social studies with “Monopoly".We enjoy learning through games and there is one main reason for it: GAMES ARE FUN! Also in higher education, game is considered to be a powerful tool to gain various learning goals! They help you to engage and motivate your audience, and reach your learning goals in a completely unusual and entertaining way. You can use game for example as a/an: ice-breaker Introduction to the topic / problem statement Activation of the previous knowledge on the topic Checkpoint for understanding of the topic / task etc. Humber Centre for Teaching & Learning listed some learning Games, which can be easily integrated in your lessons plan and help you to achieve the defined learning goals. Here are just several game scenarios: Game 1: Broken Prototype (Goal: to demonstrate the importance of two way communication)Game 2: Dr. Tangle (Goal: to develop problem-solving skills, understand the importance of working as a team, trust and critical thinking)Game 3: Finger Shoot (Goal: feedback, reflection on the topic, checking of understanding of the topic / task)Game 4: I’ve got fire! (Goal: great way for students to present skills and abilities that they are good at)Game 5: Pro and Con Grid (Goal: helps students to develop analytical and evaluative skills) These games take from 5 to 15 min of your lesson’s time and are incomparable to any other learning tool. This kind of learning remains in the memory and improve learning outcomes of the students. Under the following link, you may find useful resources and further game scenarios, which can be used in traditional but also in online learning environment: here   INNOVATION & INITIATION Digital Age Teaching & Learning at TEDxMCInnsbruck Under the motto “Rethink - what Change and Stays”, a range of fascinating speakers enthralled the audience with their ideas during the TEDxMCInnsbruck event, which took place on 15 June at the MCI. She brought the topic of digital age teaching and learning centre stage, sharing her personal story of becoming an early adopter of technology for teaching.   TEACHING & LEARNING Didactic guide to the use of videos in teaching Video formats are the most popular formats on the web and are also becoming increasingly important in higher education. Videos for teaching and learning are not only attractive, but also sustainable in terms of learning transfer. Why? Simply because: Video holds viewer’s attention It gives a quick overview and addresses a student directly on an emotional level It helps students to control his/her own learning speed and learn in a personalized way It enables an active and interactive learning experience It enables learning in multiple formats thus stimulating different areas of the brain Here you will find a detailed guide on how to integrate videos into your class.   PRME Sakai Site - Teaching and Learning Materials After having introduced you to an external PRME platform for the SDGs some time ago, there is now also an internal platform with teaching and learning materials which all MCI staff members have access to. The Sakai site Responsible Management Education includes teaching and learning materials that you can use to integrate issues such as ethics, responsible behaviour and leadership, and sustainability into your teaching. There are a number of different formats (articles, videos, websites, e-books, slides, etc.) and subject areas, with particular emphasis on the SDGs, sustainable business models and ethics. You can easily subscribe to the site via the link above. If you have resources on these topics that you want to share with others, we would appreciate it if you contribute to the collection: please send your citations or files to prme@mci.edu and we will be happy to include them.   LEARNING & COMMUNITY CORNER Congratulations! The fact that digital transformation of teaching at the MCI is not only pursued with energy but also implemented with excellent results was demonstrated once again by the great achievement of Alexander Dumfort (UVET), Harald Schöbel (Biotechnology and food technology) and Werner Stadlmayr (UVET), whose project "Ohne MINT geht es nicht! - mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche Grundlagen für alle" was shortlisted for this year's Ars Docendi - Austrian State Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Austrian Universities in the Field of Digital Transformation in Teaching. This excellent preparatory course for students in mathematical-scientific courses is based on a central Sakai site with numerous online elements such as tests, videos, online content, etc. The Ars Docendi is Austria's most prestigious prize for teaching at universities and is awarded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. This year, out of 131 submissions, five received an Ars Docendi award and ten a shortlist award. Congratulations on this great achievement! © BMBWF/Martin Lusser   Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions!Your Learning Solutions Team.
