Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students are theoretically and practically able to analyze, treat and purify different types of water (surface water, groundwater, drinking water, waste water etc.). They know important measures and procedures, e.g. for disinfection of drinking water and treatment of municipal sewage water.
Course contents
Water supply:
• Water collection, water demand, water pumping, water treatment, water storage, water distribution, legal fundamentals, treatment of drinking water (de-ironing, demanganisation; denitrification; disinfection)
Disposal of municipal sewage water:
• mechanical-biological purification with sludge treatment (BOD decomposition)
• Nitrogen elimination
• Phosphorus elimination
Other water pollution control processes such as
trickling filter, activated sludge process, biological immersion contactior, wastewater ponds, constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment, packaged treatment plants, anaerobic sewage purification, sludge treatment, industrial sewage water
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course comprises an interactive mix of lectures, discussions and individual and group work.
