Effective prevention of Islamist extremism among youth

Date 2025-07-23

Together with our project partner, we aim to contribute to the early detection and prevention of Islamist radicalisation among youth through practice-oriented research.

THE CHALLENGE

Islamist radicalization poses a threat to social cohesion. Young people are particularly vulnerable to ideological influence. The key challenge lies in reaching them early, effectively, and without stigmatization, using suitable content, formats, and channels that provide nuanced education about extremism and religion.

OUTCOMES

The research shows that Islamist radicalization is complex but can be effectively addressed through early, target group-sensitive prevention. A comprehensive model that tackles extremism as a whole promotes equal treatment and avoids stigmatization. Primary prevention—through democratic values, media literacy, and group dynamics—can empower youth long-term. Formats should be interactive, age-appropriate, and relatable, involving affected individuals and digital tools. Schools, youth centers, and parent engagement are key. Sustainable impact requires structural support, resources, and continuous impact evaluation. The findings aim to provide the Tyrol Provincial Police Directorate with practical input for the advancement of existing prevention strategies.
