Buddy Program

The MCI International Relations Office is continuously looking for motivated MCI students to support our international students at the beginning of the semester (or even beforehand).

Why should I become a buddy for international students?

As a buddy, I have the unique opportunity to enjoy an international atmosphere, make new friends from all over the world, and improve my foreign language skills (English and other languages).

What are my duties as a buddy?

As a buddy, I support approximately 10 international students upon their arrival in Innsbruck and assist them with bureaucratic and everyday matters during their first days or weeks. This includes tasks such as: picking them up upon arrival in Innsbruck, registering at the registration office, opening a bank account, purchasing an IVB semester ticket/Vorteilscard, registering with the health insurance provider, etc.

The tasks will be discussed in detail during a brief orientation session.

Do I get paid as a buddy?

As a buddy, I receive a small hourly wage (up to the current marginal earnings threshold) and will be employed on a marginal basis for one or two months. Additionally, I receive a one-time travel allowance. Detailed information (such as current hourly rates, etc.) can be found in the respective call for applications for the winter or summer semester on mci4me.

The activity can also be credited as an elective for the "International Career Skills" badge.

When will I be active as a buddy?

The majority of international students arrive in Innsbruck shortly before the start of the semester (which varies depending on the study program). Therefore, as a buddy, I should be in Innsbruck and available approximately two weeks prior to the semester start. My work is mostly flexible in terms of scheduling, though some administrative tasks may need to be completed in the mornings.

Winter Semester (September or October)
Since semester start dates vary by study program, there are two time periods during the winter semester when I can work as a buddy. It is possible to apply for just one period (A or B) or for both periods (A and B):

  • Period A (September):
As a buddy for Period A, I should be available online by mid-August at the latest and on-site in Innsbruck by the end of August.

  • Period B (October):
As a buddy for Period B, I should be available online by mid-September at the latest and on-site in Innsbruck by the end of September.

Summer Semester (March)
As a buddy for the summer semester, I should be available online by mid-February at the latest and on-site in Innsbruck by the end of February.

Which skills should I have as a buddy?
  • Sociability and openness towards international students
  • Willingness to help
  • Fluent German skills (native speaker or C2 level)
  • Good English skills and enjoyment of speaking the language
  • Good knowledge of MCI
  • Familiarity with navigating the city of Innsbruck
  • Organizational talent
  • EU citizenship
How can I apply?

The respective call for applications, including current application deadlines for the position in the winter or summer semester, can usually be found in April (for winter) or September (for summer) on www.mci4me.at.

I submit my application online:
