utilization concept for the ALQUEVA Mars simulation station

Date 2025-07-23

Re-use of a Mars simulation station as a place of education, research and experience.

The professional collaboration with the MCI student team made a decisive contribution to the possible long-term use of the Mars simulation station through their analysis.

THE CHALLENGE

Specialized research infrastructures such as Mars simulation stations are at risk of remaining unused after the end of a project. There is a lack of viable concepts for subsequent use, leaving valuable resources unused and resulting in vacancies.

OUTCOMES

Focus groups and interviews with experts from education, research and tourism were carried out for the economically sustainable use of the Mars analog station ALQUEVA. The results show a high potential for extracurricular learning opportunities, scientific use by research institutions and exclusive experiences for individual tourists. These results are also consistent with the literature research. Key requirements are content quality, sustainability and an authentic experience.
