Learning outcomes of the course unit
  • Students know the fundamentals (EU competencies, EU institutions, and EU decision-making) and effects (principles and fundamental freedoms) of EU law.

    Students are familiar with the EU decision-making process by experiencing it firsthand in terms of a one-day role-play in the context of “supply chains”.

    Students also demonstrate critical thinking skills (participation) in their approach to identify reflect and discuss the impact of the EU’s values (both the general ones, as well as the 2006 health values) when discussing practical cases in the field of the fundamental freedoms.

    Furthermore, students can research the necessary documents in the relevant EU databases.
Course contents
  • • Tasks and working methods of selected international institutions: European Center of Disease Control (ECDC), European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), World Health Organisation (WHO European Section).
    • Contents of cooperation at European level: e.g. chronic diseases, health impact assessment, mental health policy, public health policy, human resources for health, drug approval and drug safety.
    • Fundamentals of institutional European law as well as selected aspects of relevant sectoral policies (health care, consumer protection, social policy, etc.)
    • Decision-making processes at European level

  • The course comprises an interactive mix of lectures, discussions and individual and group work.
