We analysed the psychological strain experienced by employees at Emmaus through interviews and subsequently identified potential areas for action to improve mental health.
"Individually we may be unique – but together we are truly great." – Gabriele Fischer
THE CHALLENGE
The central challenge for employees at Emmaus lies in maintaining professional boundaries despite closely supporting people with addiction. Emotional closeness, a strong sense of responsibility and stressful everyday situations make self-care difficult and often lead to the neglect of their own needs – posing a risk of overload.
OUTCOMES
The interviews show: Emotional closeness to clients with addiction, relapses, and constant availability place significant strain on Emmaus employees. Many find it difficult to separate work from private life. While self-care is practiced individually, it is hardly supported institutionally. Supervision and team reflection are helpful, but not always sufficient. Staff express the need for retreat spaces, clearer rules on availability and better internal communication. The results highlight the necessity of structural measures to promote mental health. Emmaus already offers valuable approaches but could strengthen its self-care culture and ensure a healthy work environment through targeted improvements.

Partner Statement:"I would like to begin by sincerely thanking the project group for their dedicated work with the Emmaus organization. All participants familiarized themselves well with the task and approached the challenging environment of addiction disorders with openness and calm. Their strong preparation was evident in both the questions that arose and the interviews conducted, as was their genuine interest in Emmaus' therapeutic setting. The presentation of the results was also excellent. I wish the project group all the best and much success in their future educational endeavors!" Gabriele Fischer
