Onboarding in volunteer management at ÖZIV Tirol

Date 2025-08-14

As part of the project, an onboarding process for ÖZIV Tirol was created based on qualitative interviews and literature.

The project collaboration was extremely beneficial for securing our important volunteer structures at ÖZIV Tirol for the future.

THE CHALLENGE

With the church and family withdrawing from social responsibilities, the state has to step in and take over, often beyond its means. Organizations and their volunteers provide valuable support here, but they struggle with high turnover. ÖZIV Tirol also faces the challenge of keeping its volunteers in the district associations.

OUTCOMES

In order to counteract fluctuation and retain volunteers in the long term, ÖZIV Tirol is striving for a structured and uniform onboarding process. This should also help to maintain its structures in the district associations in the future. Through qualitative interviews with volunteers from ÖZIV Tirol, the managing director of ÖZIV Tirol, an expert in the field of volunteer management, and new volunteers from other areas. This led to the development of a four-phase onboarding process, which in turn resulted in future areas of action for ÖZIV Tirol. One possibility would be to create precise job descriptions and, through mentors and regular personal contact, promote not only professional integration but also social and value-oriented integration.
