The City
Rome is the capital of Italy and the country's largest and most populated municipality, with over 2.7 million residents. It is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river. The city has been one of history's most powerful and important centers, being the home of the emperor during the Roman Empire and the Italian government. The city also has a significant place in Christianity and is the present day home of the Roman Catholic Church and the site of the Vatican City, an independent city-state run by the Catholic Church. Due to this, the city has often been nicknamed "Caput Mundi" (Latin for "Capital of the World") and "The Eternal City". Also, Rome is widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful ancient cities.
The University
The Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali "Guido Carli" (Italian for Free International University for Social Studies "Guido Carli"), known by the acronym "LUISS", is an independent, private university in Rome, Italy, founded in 1974 by a group of entrepreneurs led by Umberto Agnelli brother of Gianni Agnelli.
LUISS provides undergraduate and post-graduate education, in addition to a range of double degree programs, in the fields of finance, business, management, law and political science. It is considered one of the most important institutions of higher education in Italy. It is located near the historical center of the city, between the neighborhoods of Parioli and Trieste. The university is supported by Confindustria, the Italian confederation of industries.
In 2013, in the Censis ranking of private universities, done in conjunction with the newspaper la Repubblica LUISS Guido Carli was the top university for Political Science and the second for Law and Economics (after Bocconi by one point).
In February 2014, the Confindustria-supported university, with the team composed by: Riccardo Caruso, Michael Guy Cuna, Giovanni Fassari and Alessio Ottaviani, took first place at the Rotman International Trading Competition (the global competition in Toronto involving 52 teams from 47 different universities).
With regard to research, according to the final report on research quality for 2004/2010 from ANVUR, the university takes second place (in Italy overall, for all disciplines) among small universities, tying with the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and behind Sant'Anna di Pisa.
In 2015 LUISS was ranked second best university in the Sole 24 ore national ranking.
