The City

Venice is located in northern Italy, the capital of the region Veneto, and has a population of approx. 270,000 persons. The city historically was an independent nation. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light". The city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers.

The University

The Ca' Foscari University of Venice takes its Venetian name from the university building, the Ca' Foscari (the Foscari house or palace), on the Grand Canal, between the Rialto and San Marco. This palace was the seat of the Royal Higher Commercial College, founded on August 6, 1868 as Italy's first higher education institute to deal with economics and commerce. The idea of establishing such a school arose after the annexation of the Veneto to Italy in 1866, and was particularly promoted by Luigi Luzzatti. The College was the first institute of its kind to have as its primary objective the training of entrepreneurs, but also to serve as a training college for secondary school teachers of commercial subjects. The institute became a university in 1968. It currently has four faculties.
