Aachen is a spa town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at the foot of the Eifel and Ardennes Plateaus.[ . Aachen was a favoured residence of Charlemagne, and later the place of coronation of the German kings, which is where it gained the reference as the "watering-place of kings."] Geographically, Aachen is the westernmost city of Germany, located along its borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, 61 km west-southwest of Cologne. It is located within a former coal-mining region, and this fact was important in its economic history. Aachen has about 240,000 inhabitants.
The FH Aachen - Aachen University of Applied Sciences is one of the biggest Fachhochschulen in Germany with roughly 11,300 students, 220 professors, 300 contract lecturers, and 340 assistants. It is specialized in certain topical areas (e.g. technology, engineering, business, design). It must not be confused with the RWTH Aachen, which is also located in Aachen. FH Aachen ranks as the first best among the universities of Applied Sciences in Germany in the fields of Electrical and Mechanical engineering.Ten Faculties offer 48 Bachelor's, 22 Master's and three cooperative degree programmes.
